Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative and empowering conversation style to support youth in behavior change. It can be integrated with other interventions or used as a stand-alone intervention. The goal of MI is to support the resolution of ambivalence and is more effective than traditional advice or information giving. MI is an evidenced based treatment with over 2,400 clinical trials that support its efficacy. MI can be used to support clients in working toward behavior change, engagement in services, crisis intervention, in brief encounters and other areas. MI implements client-centered communication skills and directive strategies to work collaboratively with clients on progress toward goals.
