Youth who have experienced trauma, are particularly vulnerable to self-harming behaviors. In this interactive workshop designed for both parents/caregivers and professionals, participants will learn why children may self-harm, the connection to childhood trauma and how to recognize signs of self-harming behaviors. Participants will also learn how to recognize other signs of emotional distress, crisis and suicide risk. They will learn to implement immediate help in the midst of crisis resulting from self-injury, how to talk to a child during times of calm and how to develop longer-term strategies for preventing crises and supporting healing, resilience and hope for vulnerable youth. Training Objectives:
1) Participants will be able to describe 3 reasons children may self-harm and recognize symptoms of self-
harming behavior.
2) Participants will be able to use trauma-informed approaches to talk to and respond to children who self-
harm.
3) Participants will learn to distinguish between self-harm and suicide ideation and understand when to seek
outside help for the child.
